New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited (NZAS) is New Zealand's only aluminium smelter, located on Tiwai Peninsula, across the harbour from the port of Bluff and 26 km from Invercargill, the gateway to Southland and Fiordland.
Southland is well known for its spectacular scenery, natural resources and world-class facilities.
NZAS is committed to a number of community partnerships, including the Kakapo Recovery - a partnership between the Department of Conservation (DOC), Forest & Bird and NZAS since 1990. The programme aims to protect the critically endangered kakapo, of which only 126 remain in existence - all in New Zealand. NZAS employees also volunteer on the kakapo inhabited islands assisting with maintenance on island infrastructure, as well as kakapo supplementary feeding and nest minding.
